I bought this cable to program my new Pofung/Baofeng UV-82 radio using CHIRP on my Macbook (OS X 10.9.4). Prior to ordering, I had read a lot on the Internet about 'cheap Chinese cables' being a nightmare for people to get things working, especially with Mac OS X. But the cable cost of $5 with free Prime Shipping was so low that I bought it and tried it anyway. To my surprise, it works flawlessly. The mechanical fit of the cable both on the USB side and the radio side are fine. Everything mates securely.
There are, however, a couple of things you have to do on the software side for this to work right.
1. At this moment (Sept 13, 2014), UV-82 is supported only in daily builds of CHIRP, not in the Stable version. So be sure to download and install the daily build version of CHIRP for Mac OS X.
2. Download the official PL-2303 drivers from http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/CustomerLogin.aspx. Login as guest with password guest. For more detailed discussion of drivers, see http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/MacOS_Tips.
When I ran CHIRP after installing the driver, the port I used for communicating with the radio was /dev/cu.usbserial, but that could be different in your situation. Just pick the appropriate one from the drop down menu for Port when using CHIRP.
btw, I somehow couldn't get this cable to work with the 'Generic' PL-2303 drivers from http://sourceforge.net/projects/osx-pl2303/. I almost gave up on the cable, but after I uninstalled the generic driver and installed the official driver from Prolific, the cable worked.
I'm happy that my cheap Chinese cable works well. I hope it does for you too. Good luck!
Oh, one thing I forgot to mention is that there are at least 4 amazon.com sellers for this item. In my experience, sometimes different sellers ship you different products although the product description is the same. So who knows exactly what you will get when you order! For what it is worth, my Seller was 'coodio'.
****Update on November 15, 2014****
This cable works great with the Pofung/Baofeng UV-82. Warriors orochi 4. However, it seems to have an issue with the Wouxun KG-UV8D that I bought recently. When the programming software (whether it be the Wouxun supplied Windows program or the experimental Chirp daily build on a Mac) finishes writing into the Wouxun, the computer (both Windows and Mac) freezes. The mouse and keyboard become completely inactive. I don't know what the issue is. I know that Woxun reboots itself at the end of programming. The freeze happens right after the Wouxun reboots. I gave up on this cable and ordered an FTDI cable from amazon.com. That FTDI cable works great with the Wouxun. I guess the USB driver for this Prolific-based cable isn't quite as reliable as the FTDI driver.
